What is Yoga?

Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning "uniting" or "conjunction". While we in the West often associate Yoga with a specific discipline, "Hatha Yoga", it is actually a broad category of disciplines including: Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Kundalini yoga, Raja Yoga, and many more.

There are new modalities and mashups that spring from the overall tradition including Laughter Yoga, Yoga Massage, Acroyoga.

yoga

an orthodox Hindu belief system, it prescribes a set of exercises to strengthen the body and free the soul, with an eye to attaining union with the univeral spirit. It is one of 6 oththodox (astika) schools of philosophy, aligned closely with Sankhya, which regards the universe as separated into Self (Purusha) and Matter (Prakriti), where Self is the Transcendental Self (Pure Consciousness) and is unknowable and absolute.

hatha yoga

Hatha Yoga (or Hatha Vidya) "Hatha" "is literally "Sun-Moon" referring to the solar channel (masculine/active) and the lunar channel (feminine/receptive) - making "Hatha Yoga" about the union and balance of these two channels in the body. Hatha Yoga uses physical postures (asanas) to achieve balance opposing elements: fire/water; heat/cold; positive/negative.

Asanas teach poise, balance, and strength and are practised to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment. However if an individual has too much phlegm or fat then purification procedures are a necessity before undertaking pranayama.
acu-yoga
combining yoga and acupressure for the purposes of healing and stimulating the body's natural defenses. It uses yoga positions to apply pressure to the acupoints.
laughter yoga
Hasya Yoga was developed by Dr. Madan Kataria (India) based on observations regaring the preventative and healing powers of laughter. Laughter Yoga consists of a series of exercises in laughing - sometimes natural, sometimes forced/artificial, as the body cannot tell the difference - for the physical and emotional benefits.
